Book Review of Tamora Pierce's Tempests and Slaughter
Oh my god. I was so excited when I saw this book release pop up in my e-mail.
Tamora Pierce has been my favorite author since I was in middle school. While I was pregnant with my son, I went back and reread every one of her books. Her earlier books are definitely aimed to a younger audience, but they are still worth a read. As a headstrong, non-ladylike, precocious little girl, Alanna was my hero.
These days I make a point of buying Tamora Pierce books as close to release as I can.
Tempests and Slaughter follows the lives of three young mages: Arram, Varice, and Ozorne. The story starts with the three starting at the lower levels of the University of Carthak. I believe Arram is around 8.
Semester by semester, Arram's early life is revealed, as he starts the path to becoming one of the most powerful mages. He is a pivotal character in the Wild Magic series which happens twenty years after this series.
Arram's impressive magical gifts show as much stronger than others his age early on, usually bringing him at least some trouble. But hey, who hasn't flooded a room and almost drowned their entire class?
Tempests introduces wild gods, major goddesses, the future Emperor, magical creatures and some of the powerful characters that are met in later series.
The book started a little slow, but once I got through the first thirty or forty pages, I couldn't put it down. This may be my new favorite book by Tamora Pierce.
